Hi there,

I just want to make sure I get this right.

I want to export my video lossless to my VFX artist. Is the right codec for my source material MagicYUV - YUVA 4:4:4:4?

Thanks.

I'd say it's better to use RGBA in that case.

Hi there,

Thanks for the quick response! I got impatient and after a bit of research (without thinking I could come back to these forums so quickly), did indeed conclude RGBA is the way to go.

I must say, the 87GB filesize vs. QuickTime Animation's 250GB is incredible. Makes me keep thinking I did something wrong! Thanks for all the hard work.

Out of curiosity, can you share what programs/tools/sources are you and your VFX artist is using and working with and on what OS?

Hi, sorry for the delay in response.

I'm using the latest version of Premiere Pro on Windows 10 x64. I exported in Premiere to a MagicYUV RGBA .avi. The source is a ProRes 4:4:4:4 generated by an ARRI Mini camera.

I uploaded the file to my VFX artist's portable HDD, but he can't seem to import the file to After Effects on his MacOS. He's running the latest version of Mojave on a 2017 iMac Pro.

He has run the install.command file a couple times, and can see the first handful of seconds of the video on VLC before freezing. On Quicktime, he cannot see the file at all. But more importantly, After Effects or Media Encoder don't allow him to import the file at all.

Any issues as to why this is? Unfortunately, he is now working remotely, so we're trying to figure out a way for the file to work.

Update: Seems to have to do with Adobe's legacy QuickTime format removal. Our VFX artist has managed to downgrade his version of After Effects but still has performance issues with the file. We're hoping we can convert lossless from MagicYUV to a 10-bit OpenEXR with the alpha channel, or similar.

Any additional advice would be appreciated.
